Sunday Noon
"Sunday Noon" came together later in the process, after nearly all the other songs on the album had been recorded. I wanted to add something special to the mix, and pedal steel guitar—one of my favorite sounds—felt like the perfect fit. Unfortunately, I don’t own one, don’t know how to play one, and had already blown through my budget for this album. So, hiring one of the incredible pedal steel players here in Minneapolis wasn’t an option. Instead, I got creative and experimented with my guitar to capture a similar vibe. No one who knows pedal steel would mistake it for the real thing, but I’m happy with how it turned out.
The song itself starts with a memory of a memory. My Granny once shared with me a moment of contentment and clarity from her life, which I tried to capture in the first verse. I got the timeline a bit wrong—my Aunts Kate and Sarah wouldn’t have been in a pram during that period—but hopefully, the sentiment comes through. Writing these little summaries makes it clear how much of this album is about those fleeting moments of lucidity that punctuate the everyday.
